We kept hearing a single comment regarding a summation of the alpha K7's current performance level: "The FPU is clearly stronger than the K6-2 or K6-3's, it's about equal in performance to the Intel P3-500's FPU. The integer functionality of the K7 500 is also about equivalent to the P3-500 as well, in general the two CPUs are very close at this point in benchmarks." Re: " Are there any INTC chips in the works with a faster FPU other than Merced?" Coppermine will be a 0.18 micron Pentium III with 256K on-chip L2 cache, TWICE the size of the Celeron's L2 cache. The Coppermine should run at 600 MHz and be available around October. The FPU architecture is the same as the P2/Celeron/P3 - but the clock speed and L2 cache speed - FULL CPU speed - should help A LOT ! Beyond that, Willamette should have a greatly improved FPU but that won't be available until mid-2000, give or take a few months.
