According to MPT, is the "risk" inherent in owning the SPX in 1999 the same as 1982? Does MPT include the market PE in the risk calcualtion? Is risk defined only relative to other stocks or stock portfolios and not to any external, real-world benchmarks? Is the risk of over-owning gold stocks vs the S&P the same now as it was when gold was $800?

Thanks

Mike
