Is it a surprise that Windows98 will not be "merged" with Windows2000?
There could be technical reasons for not combining the two. IMHO, the the reason they gave today officially is not the main one.
It is obvious that they did not want to combine a product under DOJ scrunity with one that is not. NT is not a monopoly. If they had just one version of Windows, I could see "NT" dragged into the case. It would have caused complications in any remedies a judge may impose on the company in relation to Windows98.
DOJ combined with some technical complexity might have killed the idea.

I had thought about this when MSFT started doing so poorly in court with their own witnesses. I could not imagine a combination of the programming codes (sorry my technical knowledge is limited)of Windows98 and Windows2000. They would have been insane to proceed given the uncertainty of the Windows98 case.

This announcement means that I am more confident in the company's ability to deal with the anti-trust case. All their contingency plans are being worked on. Getting more bullish long term(for shares). Short term cautious as an options trader but bullish as a shareholder.
