Clarence --

Thanks for the URL on DataPort.
The products do look good.
I will explore some there.

Due to the total of six or seven machines I have in mind accessing, I feel an external will be needed as there will be a hole in the face of the box when I'm somewhere else.

I know "absolutely nothing" about USB, but that function seems to be the coming thing.....you or anyone have any thoughts about it?
I've read here several times from different posters that it's not a good prospect but why not ?

Back in the old days (8086, 8088, 286 and 386), I had a homemade rig that I used which was an old external drive box with a IDE 300 mg hd .... for the day and time, it was pretty useful.... remember the old "park" command ?
Most of the youngsters I know don't ......
one of the fastest and best for its' time was a speedball from Tandy using a 80186 chip ..... yep, that is correct, a 186 .... I've still got that relic around here somewhere.

Now, I've gotten to carrying a laptop, but my fading eyesight doesn't take kindly to those little bitty screens these days ...ggggg... so I got to thinking about building a new portable drive .....

Thanks again for the help.

Clarence,

What do you mean by "hot-swappable"? My DataStors have a on/off switch but I was under the impression that I would need a special (IDE) controller to actually add/remove drives while the computer was running.

I did not test this assumption, thinking that powering on the drive while running may injure the drive, yes/no?

I would love to be wrong about this.
