Oracle, PeopleSoft Look Beyond ERP
Market_________

Enterprise resource planning software vendors Oracle and PeopleSoft, faced with plummeting sales and softening stock prices, are seeking new ways to increase business.
Oracle plans to unveil a simple supply-chain management product later this month, according to customers and analysts, while sources say PeopleSoft wants to acquire a maker of front-office software.

Oracle has been developing its own advance-planning and scheduling
engine for midtier manufacturers. But the idea of simplified supply-chain software doesn't sit well with some market watchers. "Before you can effectively use a supply-chain product, it has to be able to handle a very complex set of mathematics and algorithms," says
David Dobrin, an analyst at Benchmarking Partners.

PeopleSoft's increased interest in the front-office space may be triggered by its stagnant first-quarter revenue. It has partnerships with Siebel Systems Inc. and Vantive Corp. in that market, but CEO David Duffield says he's "exploring other alternatives."
Sources say PeopleSoft will likely purchase a second-tier front-office software vendor.
