My father wanted me to join Mensa - don't ask me why, I don't know. He wanted me to go to lawschool too, so let's just say he didn't always have the greatest ideas.

Anyhoo, I went to a meeting down in Southern Cal and I took my husband with me. My husband is (I think) brighter than I am - or at the very least more capable of doing something with his intelligence, but he doesn't test well and he couldn't get into Mensa on his test scores (SAT, GRE, LSAT - Mensa honors them all)- not that he would have wanted to. So we went to this party, full of boring and kinda weird people and someone comes up to my husband and says "So, are you a member...or just a guest?" Then we left.

When we moved to Northern Cal our new neighbor turned out to be in Mensa. She had Mensa parties. We went to one to be sociable. A more dismal group of low functioning putatively highly intelligent people you have never met - I hope. None of the "guests" had good jobs (and they whined about that) or good personalities. I grant you a sample of two is unreliable but I do not want to do any more sampling.

I once read that there was an organization called DENSA, made up of people of exceptional intellectual and practical achievement whose IQs did not measure up to the MENSA standard. I wonder if there really is; I hope so.

slipped DENSA into Excite search engine and voilá

densa.com

ps...i don't think they mate, way too much fun. they test tube instead
