The phrase "what a soldier's life is all about" reminded me of a comment made by one reporter to John Paul Van in the book, "A Bright Shining Lie." I don't have the quote precise, but something like: "War is not about the warriors. It's about the women and children and rice paddies." It always stuck with me, poignantly in this case, as that had originally been Van's thought himself. I've stated repeatedly that I have no stand in this conflict, not because of any reason except that I simply don't KNOW what the right thing to do is. But I'm not really young and I have picked up a thing or two on the road. One of the most important is to be VERY CAREFUL of automatically believing what you read and what you hear on the "news." I saw enough outright lies by network news on Central America several years ago that I've been collecting filters and reference sources ever since. I too feel strongly that Milosevic is a bad, bad guy. And it appears that the KLA are bad guys. But I don't KNOW that for a fact yet. I've heard other people in the past called terrorists, and once in their country I have found that the lies about them were so great as to create a myth back in the United States, a false myth. Many things have happened in this country that gave rise to great pride and shouts and nationalism, and the objectors were often badly mistreated, only to be agreed with years later. I would say we need to be very, very careful of too much sureness. I myself am sure of only one thing: it is not right to see children, whether Albanian or Serbian, die needlessly. The very best to those searching for truth - Raven
