Actually, the percentage of the population that was Jewish in 1914 was a bit less than 12%, I unintentionally exaggerated in my irritability. The World Book agrees, incidentally, that many of the Arabs who were in Palestine at that point had come in since the mid-19th century, although it does not venture a guess as to how many, and it puts the Jewish population in the mid- 19th century at 24,000.
