More than 5 inputs? I input more than that and my best nets have 8-10 inputs... In any case, 40 would be difficult. I think it could handle it if your system could, as they would all part of the same indicator, and so the system may be Ok with it. I don't know.. Interesting problem is whether pre-processing is necessary or not.

I suspect that more inputs would be fine if they were binary because the fact that there were less possible values would limit the degrees of freedom.
