China-usa-trade Washington

''We're very close to reaching a framework agreement. I don't think there's going to be an entire package deal that will be done at the 11th hour,'' said one U.S. official.

''There will probably be some framework that will set out some firmer timeline, probably over the next few months, to work out the details,'' the official added. ''That's what is likely, though we're not there yet.''

Another U.S. official said that while China and the United States have made ''great progress'' in some areas, such as wheat and citrus products, there are still differences over financial services, banking, textiles as well as ensuring that any trade deal is enforceable.

''We've seen too many agreements where countries made concessions but it was then very difficult for American businesses to actually operate in (foreign) markets,'' the official said.

Zhu, the first Chinese prime minister to visit the United States in 15 years, had very much wanted to return to Beijing with a deal in hand for the United States to give its blessing to China's 13-year effort to join the 134-member WTO.

While I'm not an engineer, perhaps a small device could be installed with, if no other alternative is available, a manual switch connecting the transmitter to the existing tube radio antenna. At most, there would be a very small switch under the dash, and no other device in view.
