ATI Technologies 2nd-Qtr Profit Rises 45% to 18c-Shr (Update1) (Adds
analyst comment, details, stock price.)

Thornhill, Ontario, April 8 (Bloomberg) -- ATI Technologies Inc.'s
fiscal second-quarter profit rose 45 percent, beating expectations, as
the No. 1 maker of 3D graphics cards for personal computers expanded
its product line and market share.

Profit from operations rose to US$39 million, or 18 cents a share, for
the period ended Feb. 28, from net income of US$27 million, or 13
cents, adjusted for a 4-for-1 stock split a year earlier. The
company was expected to earn 16 cents, the average estimate of
analysts from First Call Corp. Revenue rose 63 percent to US$297.2
million from US$182 million a year ago.

ATI has captured 30 percent of the market for devices that enhance
graphics on PCs, as competitors dwindled to about nine from almost 30
four years ago. The company counts big PC makers Dell Computer Corp.
and Gateway 2000 Inc. among its customers. ''They had strong
(graphics) board sales and good acceptance of their new products,''
said Byron Berry, a Yorkton Securities analyst, who rates ATI a ''strong buy.''

ATI fell C$1.1 to C$23.9 in early trading.

In addition to strong graphics chips sales for desktop PCs, the
company said it increased sales in the notebook PC market,
particularly to No. 1 PC maker, Compaq Computer Corp. ATI's products
can now be found in all models of Compaq's notebooks, the company
said, and in eight of the top 10 notebook PC makers.

Including a charge of US$17.3 million, or 8 cents a share, related to
its acquisition last year of Chromatic Research Inc., the company
reported net income of US$21.7 million or 10 cents. There
were no charges or gains in the year-ago quarter.
