you've reminded me that there is a book called the Victorian internet (the telegraph) which says that all this has happened again. There were chat groups, business transactions and market information were expedited, on-line romances...etc. etc.

However, the author's premise is that in fact that earlier revolution was much more dramatic as letters that took weeks to deliver could be cut down to seconds, point to point. That now we already have instantaneous communication point to point via telephone, fax, television, etc.
