Get out your barf bags, Ericy sounding like their old selves... Ericsson Leads the Industry Momentum for GSM and TDMA Towards 3G STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 1999--In the light of the recent agreement with Qualcomm, L.M. Ericsson CEO Sven-Christer Nilsson today reiterated the company's strong support of the evolution of second-generation digital wireless systems GSM and TDMA to third-generation mobile services. This common evolution will draw on GPRS packet technology as well as EDGE - Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution - a new air-interface technology, to offer third-generation data rates for the global evolution of GSM and TDMA to 3G. "We expect the many commonalities in the evolution of GSM and TDMA to be one of the most potent driving forces in realizing next-generation wireless Internet and multimedia services in a timely fashion," says Sven-Christer Nilsson. Ericsson is also working in partnership with global customers in the creation of applications for this 3G environment. Concurrently, Sven-Christer Nilsson also emphasized that, after the acquisition of QUALCOMM's terrestrial CDMA wireless infrastructure R&D and manufacturing, Ericsson remains committed to WCDMA as the leading global 3G standard for new spectrum with no further changes to the standard recommended ETSI/ARIB standard to avoid further delays. Ericsson continues to strongly advocate a market-driven standardization and harmonization with co-existence of two high-level groupings of technologies; EDGE as per ETSI/UWC, and CDMA technologies. The CDMA grouping accommodates three optional modes; FDD direct-spread WCDMA as per ETSI/ARIB, with a chip rate of 4.096/3.84 Mcps according to global operators' harmonized proposal; multicarrier cdma2000 as per TIA with a chip rate of 3.68 Mcps/backwards compatible with cdmaOne as per TIA (TR 45.5); and TDD as per ETSI, harmonized with China's TD-SCDMA. Ericsson is the leading provider in the new telecom world, with communication solutions that combine telecom and datacom technologies with the freedom of mobility for the user. With more than 100,000 employees in 140 countries, Ericsson simplifies communications for its customers-network operators, service providers, enterprises and consumers-the world over.
