Motorola and Alcatel Microelectronics Agree to Jointly Develop and Manufacture Networking IC Solutions for the Communications Industry

BusinessWire, Monday, April 12, 1999 at 08:24

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 12, 1999--

This Alliance Brings Together Two Industry Leaders With Unique
Expertise

The network communications industry is getting a boost today with
the announcement of a key alliance between Motorola Semiconductor
Products Sector and Alcatel Microelectronics.
These two communication experts have aligned in a specific domain
to provide integrated solutions, enabling customers to focus on core
competencies, saving development resources while reducing time to
market.
Motorola's leadership in single-channel CODECs, global
distribution network and quality initiatives combined with Alcatel
Microelectronics' expertise in IC's for access systems provide
customers with innovative solutions for their communication needs.
"This alliance enhances Motorola's leadership position in the
communication arena with the addition of Alcatel Microelectronic's
dual-channel CODECs and SLICs to our product line," said Michael
Chaddock, director of Motorola's Telephony Operation.
"Motorola's reputation for innovative communication solutions,
quality initiatives and our global distribution channels combined with
Alcatel Microelectronics' expertise in high voltage precision analog
semiconductor technology creates a distinctive competitive edge for
our customers."
"This alliance will capitalize on the expertise of both companies
to deliver high quality, low cost, integrated solutions," said Pierre
Garnier, deputy director, Sales and Marketing of Alcatel's
Microelectronics activities.
In the context of this agreement, the two companies will work
together to further develop markets and solutions in CODECs and SLICs
for Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) applications.

Dual-Channel POTS Chipset

The first product generated from this alignment is a dual-channel
POTS chipset. This highly integrated POTS solution, which is marketed
under part number MS140131KT, is targeted towards communication
applications including CPE terminal equipment, SOHO routers, ISDN
network termination devices, digital loop carriers, and more. This
dual-channel POTS chipset provides all the functions necessary to
connect legacy analog telephone equipment with modern digital
telecommunications networks.

MS140131KT Features

The MS140131KT is a dual channel, fully programmable POTS
chipset. It provides the line interface for standard POTS including
performing ringing injection, metering, tone generation, voice coding,
and support of caller ID. Virtually all system-dependent parameters
can be set under software control. The high integration leads to a
reduced chip count, and lowers costs for the customer. It also allows
the developer to make one basic product for all countries without
having to change circuit components to match local requirements. Local
adaptation can be done through software download.

Availability and Technical Support

The MS140131KT is available for samples in 2Q99 with production
in 3Q99. For pricing information, or to place an order, customers
should contact their local Motorola sales office or distributor.
