Nortel, BCE shares surge on Bell Atlantic pact

MONTREAL, April 8 (Reuters) - Shares of Canadian telecommunications equipment maker
Northern Telecom Ltd. (Toronto:NTL.TO - news) and its parent BCE Inc. (Toronto:BCE.TO
- news) surged on Thursday after Bell Atlantic Corp. (NYSE:BEL - news) said it awarded a
network supply contract to Nortel worth up to $1 billion.

Nortel shares soared C$8.25 at C$109.45 on the Toronto Stock Exchange, while BCE shares
jumped C$3.35 at C$75.80. The volume of shares of BCE, which owns 41 percent of
Mississauga, Ontario-based Nortel, was more than 1.3 million. Nortel share volume was almost 900,000.
