excerpt from CBS Marketwatch..interview with CEO of VIGN Which competitor do you think the most about? Walsh: The company we're most often compared to is Broadvision (BVSN). And how do you see yourself competing against them? Walsh: We certainly stack very favorably. In the end, cheaper, better, faster. Our solutions can be deployed a lot faster, generally they're less expensive. More importantly, with the new product that we released called the syndication server, not only can companies speed things up while getting their own business online, but now they can expand that and start to distribute their products through other sites online as well. And that presents us more of a network kind of business model opportunity, which again from an investor standpoint is very unique and very exciting. And all of that has really resulted, from a Broadvision, perspective, of us acquiring customers at a rate about twice as fast as they are given the numbers that they've publicly released over the last three to four quarters. How does the revenue recognition happen with the syndication Server? Walsh: The revenue from the syndication server is generally recognized on a subscription basis based on the number of sites that customers want to develop what we call distributor-affiliate relationships ... [These relationships are] happening today, in that First USA paid AOL $500 million to be the exclusive credit card provider at that site. Well, they opened up a new channel for them, they're able to reach a target audience that they couldn't otherwise reach directly, and they've blocked out their competitors to that channel. So it's happening today, but it's all one [at a time]. Think about inside organizations today, they all have different databases, and production processes, and firewalls, and Web site architectures, and so forth. In that disparate environment, think about taking out a piece of a Web site and handing it to another company and say, 'Here, go integrate this application into your Web site.' It's very, very difficult. That's what the Vignette Syndication Server is all about is enabling that to happen in a very manageable and automated fashion. I would like to hear the other side of the story.
