Lorne:

I agree with you that there are some dangers in flexing too much muscle. However, in economic terms, military prowess offers quite a premium to the stated gdp of a nation.
I read an article in the Drudge report that the US was utilizing a new cluster bomb against Serb armor. I do not know if it was a misprint, but the article indicated that one B1 bomber could take out hundreds of pieces of enemy armor. If true, it would bring closer the time that various air weapons could replace substantial amounts of ground forces. Looking at MSCNBC today, I was struck at the systematic destruction of the Serb infrastructure at the cost of one plane to date. To the victor belongs the spoils, and the spoils are coming to this country in unprecedented amounts of foreign investment that is underwriting many of the imbalances so eloquently stated on this board. As long as we remain world champs our economic situation should remain stable. And as long as our economy continues it growth producing a first rate military, first rate technology machine, a first class telecommunication business, the need for gold to become an active hedge will remain dormant.
