Disney to launch 24-hr cable, satellite soaps channel

April 8, 1999 04:00 PM
NEW YORK, April 8 (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co.'s DIS Disney/ABC Cable Networks said Thursday it plans in nine months to launch a 24-hour soap opera network available through cable and satellite television providers.

Programming for the new channel will include same-day repeats of ABC's four daytime soaps -- "General Hospital", All My Children", "One Life To Live" and "Port Charles", the company said.

Original programming created and developed for the channel and some "classic prime time soaps" also will be carried on the service.

A Disney Channel spokeswoman said cable and satellite systems have expressed interest in the new channel, but no firm deals to carry the new programming are in place.

"This is compelling programming and viewers are looking for networks to be more flexible," Anne Sweeney, president of ABC/Disney Cable Networks, said in a prepared statement. "ABC is the first to make entertainment programming available on this basis. The soap opera channel can be to its fans what ESPN is to sports fans."

Tests in Houston and Chicago last year were "extremely positive" in terms of audience levels and awareness of the service, the cable network said.

"The experiment gave current daytime fans the opportunity to enjoy more episodes each week," Anglela Shapiro, president of ABC daytime television, said in the statement. "It also attracted lapsed viewers whose schedules do not permit daytime viewing and it brought new viewers to the dramas."
