"Tribune Co. <TRB.N> invests in SuperMarkets Online
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., April 8 (Reuters) - Catalina
Marketing Corp. <POS.N> said Thursday that media firm Tribune
Co. <TRB.N> has invested and formed an alliance with Catalina's
Internet coupon site, SuperMarkets Online.
The Tribune owns the Chicago Tribune, other newspapers, TV
and radio stations. Tribune was also an early investor in
America Online Inc. <AOL.N>, Excite Inc. <XCIT.O> and Digital
City. Tribune used its mass media reach to similarly promote
SuperMarkets Online, Catalina said.
Shares in Catalina rose 1-5/8 on the New York Stock
Exchange in morning trading, up to 92-3/8. Shares in Tribune
Co. were up 3/4, to 73-7/16.
The SuperMarkets Online site allows Internet users to type
in their Zip code, pick a supermarket and print out bar-code
coupons. The coupons can be used for name-brand items at more
than 9,000 markets.
"We look for Internet companies that push the traditional
media envelope," Andy Oleszczuk, the president of Tribune
Ventures for Tribune Company, said in a prepared statement.
"With SuperMarkets Online, we see a company that represents the
future of consumer packaged goods promotion and that will help
our traditional media properties better serve the needs of some
of our most important advertisers."
Tribune Co. will use SuperMarkets Online coupons to help
build traffic to -- and advertiser interest in -- Tribune Web
sites affiliated with its media properties.
"This alliance is an affirmation of our strong position in
Catalina Marketing provides a network of marketing programs
to more than 150 consumer goods companies. The Catalina
Marketing Network provides purchase-based, individually
customized communications and promotions that reaches more than
156 million U.S. shoppers every week in more than 11,800
installed supermarkets.
