Re: "I thought Coppermine was a PIII built on 0.18. Is that incorrect?"

As far as I know it is. Coppermine may have some extra L1 over and above the Pieceofsh*t-III, but that's a topic of much debate right now, I think. That's why Elmer's assumption that the AMD rep was talking about Coppermine as seventh generation Intel product is, IMHO, probably erroneous.

I think what that AMD rep was trying to say is that the K7 core will be faster than any sixth generation core, and may be faster than any seventh. Of course, ultimate performance depends on what kind (speed) and how much (MB) cache is hooked onto it--including on die cache.

Re: "What are the architectural differences between Coppermine and PIII? I thought Coppermine was a PIII built on 0.18. Is that incorrect?"

From all reports Coppermine will be a PIII with 256K of on die L2 cache. There are hints of a 64K L1 but those are only rumors and not reliable. Furthermore, Coppermine will be completely re-layedout to take advantage of Intel's new 6 metal layer .18u process, so it's really more than just a shrink but what is called in the industry a compaction. Expect lower L2 latencies and a nice performance boost beyond what would be expected from frequency scaling alone. As for architectural changes, I haven't seen anything in the press.
