Aware stock bolted 21 3/8, or 37%, finishing at 78 7/8, as investors decided Aware technology will figure into the $1 billion contract Nortel Networks (NT:NYSE) announced with Bell Atlantic (BEL:NYSE) Thursday.

As part of the deal, Nortel will furnish Bell Atlantic with digital subscriber line systems that connect subscribers efficiently to high-speed Internet services. A Nortel official declined to state where the company procures its ADSL technology.

But Steven Schuster, portfolio manager with Gemina Capital, explained that Aware licenses its DSL software to Analog Devices, which in turns is a supplier of Nortel. Gemina is standing pat on its sizeable Aware investment.

Aware "is still under the radar screen," said Schuster. "It's still being recognized." Gemina is standing pat on its sizeable stake in Aware.

Aware's Paris-based rival Alcatel (ALA:NYSE), an incumbent supplier of Bell Atlantic, will also provision Bell Atlantic with certain ADSL gear. Alcatel shares climbed 7/8, or 4% to 24 7/8; Nortel rose 8 3/8, or 12%, to 76 1/4. Aware officials could not be reached for comment.
