Absolutely, positively FALSE. It is a modem in every sense of the word. I've seen that in the press before by some supposedly techno-savvy journalists. It's wrong.


Well, Dave, there is not absolute on this argument. Just opinions and disagreements about terminology. Here is a cite that says cable modems modulate and demodulate, but they're not modems. They're more like LAN interface cards. Go figure.

I think the best answer is that a cable modem is much more than a modem. It does modulate/demodulate, but it is also a tuner, and a bridge. Here is an excellent discussion:
