I have researched hooking up a cell phone to my laptop, and you need to buy a computer "card" which slides right into the slot on the side of your laptop. And you need a connection wire to your phone. 3-com sells the cards for about $250, and one can buy them from the local cellular company. I went birdwatching in Ecuador in Jan. and thought it would have been immensely neat to check quotes on my laptop and Iridium phone out in the wilderness. Ain't rich enough yet. I know of no reason that the Iridium phones would be any different from regular cell phones.

No. They are not designed to work with modems. The vocoder which encodes the voice for digital transmission is designed to handle voice, not the audio signal that comes out of a modem. Same with all digital phones.

This isn't true.
