Fourth really big eye catching tidbit for ANC.

In December 1997 ANC won a lawsuit award worth $8.9 million against Trifox of Campbell, California. They obtained an award for damages for $4.4 million and erasing a $4.5 million liability for future payments from its balance sheet. This lawsuit was fought because Angoss bought the rights to several of Trifox's computer programs in December 1993, but never received the documentation and software tools necessary to fully exploit its purchase.

This money has not been received by ANC yet and does not show up on its books. My first big worry was that ANC would not be able to collect their money after TRIFOX's appeal failed. However from the annual report (March 26, 1999) "the company has obtained financial statements for TRIFOX, confirming that its business is currently viable and profitable". In January, 1999 the Company received a cash offer from TRIFOX to settle the litigation, which the company has rejected. To turn down a cash offer ANC must be fairly sure it is going to win the case and be able to collect the full amount.

Also from the annual report it was mentioned that on March 12, 1999 TRIFOX appealed the decision and it will take 6-12 months before they ANC gets their money. From the annual report "Management of the company has been advised that the likelihood of a successful appeal by TRIFOX is remote"

After finding out about the lawsuit I was no longer worried about ANC cash position. It is now wonder insiders are loading up.

Now we get to the best part - the products and industry.

For people that don't know, data mining involves the use of software to automatically explore data to identify patterns, anomalies and correlations which yield useful knowledge about trends, processes and relationships amoung the data elements.

Most of the source I could find or have talked to estimate the data mining as a $1-3 billion/year by the year 2000 with an growth rate of 20-40% after that (e.g Lazard Frères & Co. llc, Report Published March 6, 1998). If ANC can only get 3-5% of that market their revenues and earnings will be staggering.

When this stock came on the market in 1993 there was tons of industry buzz and media hype associated with "business intelligence". This drove the price of ANC to $2. However many companies at the time (even among the largest organizations) were not "ready" for data mining at the enterprise level, because they are trying to resolve front end issues such as database infrastructure investments, data preparation, data quality or other issues. In addition, many small to medium business didn't even keep databases.

However in the past couple of years you can't go to a business without finding at least one database in the works. In addition, larger companies have dramatically expanded their databases and are working out the bugs. Knowledge is power and digital data is being stored at an exponential rate. I can't see how data mining won't be a huge industry in the near future.
