All I know is that you can't hook up a modem to an analog cell phone, only a digital cell phone. As to Iridium's status, I don't know for sure. But they will have to do this soon in case this globe trotting, birdwatching stock trader gets rich enough to buy an Iridium phone and trade stocks from the midst of the jungle. But not at $7-10/minute.

If Iridium phones don't have a connection to allow a direct wired modem to use them, then one can simply use audio couplers. Your claims that an iridium phone will somehow ignore a modem's audio tones is incorrect. The delay introduced by DSP is less than 3ms.
