Interestingly, the media seems to have taken something of a generalized bashing on this thread in the wake of the bpgus release. That's a stretch since the media had nothing to do with it. Bloomberg conceivably might be criticized for not reacting sooner--but it's a leap to blame the media other than a reflection of a general anti-media bias.

Coincidentally, I worked for AP for five years and the reputable wire services (AP, Retuers, AFP, etc)) don't let any "cub reporter" put a story on the wires directly. Stories go through editors, usually veterans, before they get on the wires. If something does happen to get through, corrections are made on a bulletin basis. Credibility is vital to them.

Agree with you that there was skepticism shown--looking back on this thread alone that some quickly questioned the purported release--and that PAIR didn't rise higher in the interval betwen publication and denial. Still, I can't see any difference betweeen scamming on the phone or in the mails and scamming on the internet. A wrong is a wrong where ever it is committed.
