One can't only count the modems to determine the potential market. We must remember the equipment in the Central Office and else where. Also it should be pointed out what Aware does offer as products and/or services.

From the Aware web site:

"Aware provides ASIC cores that reduce development time, increase throughput performance and reduce risk in DSL chipset developments.
Aware's field-proven, highly specialized cores enable "system on a chip" designers to treat complex ADSL functions as easy-to-use building blocks that may be incorporated into application specific integrated circuits. The cores enable silicon providers and equipment manufacturers to leverage Aware's experience and expertise to dramatically reduce development risks and time to market.

Available in multiport configurations for high-port density solutions are Aware's Alphaeus and Zephyr cores.

The Alphaeus core implements the transition from ADSL data to ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) cells enabling ATM over ADSL transmissions per ANSI T1.413 and the ITU I.432 standards. Utopia Level 1 or 2 interfaces are provided per the ADSL Forum Utopia Specifications.

The Zephyr core implements the protocols and data integrity functions required for standard- compliant ADSL solutions. This highly configurable core supports all framing, error correction and interleaving modes required by ANSI T1.413 and the ITU G.Lite standard.
Alphaeus and Zephyr are the first in a family of ASIC cores that Aware has developed to provide the functionality of a complete, standard-compliant DMT modem. Each core is available in multiport configurations for developers of central office and digital loop carrier solutions and single port configurations for designers of customer premise and PC modem solutions.

Licensing contracts do not run forever...Aware is bound to raise their licensing fees in the near future. After officially becoming the international standard, and with the upcoming DSL/communications conferences, their technology and company name will have even more clout.(not that they aren't well on their way already) They are ultimately being seen by the majority of the industry as the DSL provider/chipset of choice, also yielding them the lions share of the market. Hence the stock is and will continue to reflect this.

<..When there are 60 million DSL modems shipped per year some years hence and Aware gets $1/each for a 50% share of the market that is $30M. Not much for a company with a $1.7 billion dollar market cap..>

They get technology licensing fees as well as patent licensing fees, and sell strong margin G.Lite ASIC cores (if G.Lite takes off big, this could be substantial):

In general, I agree with your skepticism, and have yet to verify that AWRE gets anything from BEL/Nortel. Even BBRS entertains this is WAY overvalued. Still, this has the razzmatazz DSL-train momentum behind it, so shorts be careful. (Look at MCGX)
