Your points are definitely valid. Given the attacks that you have withstood on this board, you must be looking for that hint of negativity in the ASND responses.

I am not discounting revenue to the carrier space from routers at all. CSCO will continue to grow carrier revenue at the pace that carriers grow. My point was initially aimed at the argument that ASND's ATM/Frame relay products were in decline to CSCO's or other vendors IP based products, which is, imo, ludicrous. I believe that there will be several years of strong ATM and multiservice switch growth going forward and that IP in the core will not displace these products any time soon. I have stated several times that both companies are important to the growth of the internet.

ASND is certainly not out there telling the customers what they should or should not implement. the products generated by ASND are a direct result of in depth market requirements generated by their customers. It is actually John Chambers that spends his time telling the industry where it should be. I am also pro-csco, but enough with the bashing and hype..

This article yesterday seems to take a little bit away from Chamber's claim that IP will rule the world soon..

"Already, ATM technology is being used quite extensively by telecommunications carriers and, analysts said, Cisco has to boost its presence in that area if it is to gain market share with carriers. Lucent and Nortel, on the other hand, have decades of experience selling equipment to them.

Both companies have products that use so-called ATM technology, which is one way that information is shuttled back and forth across networks. Another technology, IP, or Internet Protocol, is the lingua franca of the Internet but is not reliable enough to carry large amounts of voice traffic across networks, analysts said.

"Cisco's challenge is to develop credibility in the carrier market and they need to do that in direct competition to both Lucent and Nortel," said John Armstrong, an analyst with market research firm Dataquest.

"This is important for Cisco because we have a very crisp vision of what the new world network is going to look like," said Ammar Hanafi, a member of San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco's business development group. "That network is built around Internet technology and transitioning the whole infrastructure of service providers."
