Robert,
"Is he for real? Let us hope so!"
Amen to that. Remarkable things for a political leader to say. It would even be remarkable in the US, where you would mainly get lambasted in the press and by your political opposition, but it is especially remarkable in a country where the wrong speech can land you in jail or under house arrest. Little wisps of hope waft through the air sometimes.

Of course he's for real. Anybody that has paid even the slightest of attention to China the past few years knows that they're some of the most radical economic and political reformers in ANY global or historical context. (I know I can't say democrats, because we Americans reserve that term only for our special friends, like Boris Yeltsin)

But of course, Slick is cutting him off at the knees, refusing to bring China into the mainstream via the WTO.

I must admit, I'm mightily steamed about this. The stakes are so high: free trade, constructive engagement, a chilling of some of the recent overheated rhetoric, etc. But it's not to be. Clinton has zero political capital. Can't push it through Congress. So gutless he won't even try. Cowed by the textile lobby, no less. Pathetic.

Clinton has flubbed GATT. Flubbed China. Flubbed Kosovo. It's true. We really do have a "finger-wagging Presidency."
