To All, Compaq, the view from Houston. "Compaq Expecting compact profits" was the lead headline for the entire business section of the chronic today. Not surprisingly, as it is a major employer, supporter of the community (the gate at Sam Houston Race Park says Compaq across the top) and very visible in the Bayou City. Some quotes and my take on them: 1. "The quarter's shortfall reflects LOWER THAN ANTICIPATED DEMAND AND INCREASED COMPETITIVE PRICING IN THE COMMERCIAL PC SECTOR." After all the lies about the business boxes selling great, it is good to hear somebody admit what we knew has been the truth for several months now. The business pc market sucks. The server market, which they didn't mention by name, also stinks. The workstation market is in a state of retreat. Folks, cos. are not increasing spending on IT in the face of its relative uselessness and the Y2K problem. 2. "The sales mix is heavy at the low end and the shortfall is at the high end." More of the same. 3. "Analysts were taken by surprise." That line should read that analysts were asleep at the switch. As I said in my IFC article, "Beyond The Valley Of The Dulls-Analysts," these people are not only co-opted by the corporations due to investment banking and too cozy relationships, but they really don't know how to do their jobs even if they wanted to. Obviously, this doesn't apply to 100% of all analysts. Just the great majority. 4. "In a few days, Compaq kicks off 'Innovative Forum 99' at The George Brown Convention Center, with 4500 of the company's largest customers and 250 journalists." The story may snowball from here. The journalists are going to be careful not to be scammed again. At least the ones who realize they have been scammed will be careful. <g> All in all, a dandy littl announcement. It should hit Dell, too, as no matter what this quarter looks like, the pc market is heading toward the dark ages. Great for consumers, bad for scamsters. MB
