White House threatens to veto Y2K bill

The debate surrounding a controversial bill now in the Senate that looks to limit lawsuits arising from the Year 2000 technology glitch got hotter today as the White House officially spoke out against the measure and threatened to veto the bill.

In a strongly worded statement, the Clinton administration criticized the "Y2K Act"--S.96, submitted by Commerce Committee chairman Sen. John McCain, as well as the amendment proposed by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) that looked to waterdown some of the litigation protections for companies contained in the earlier version of the bill....

I've felt for a long time that the technology companies were in danger of being scapegoated by our esteemed President. There is plenty of blame to go around for any lack of Y2K preparedness. But it's not hard to predict how much of it the White House is likely to accept.
