Comdisco climbs with digital start-ups
Reuters Story - April 09, 1999 14:35
CHICAGO, April 9 (Reuters) - Shares of technology services provider Comdisco Inc. climbed Friday on spillover buying tied to sharp gains in two start-up companies that offer digital subscriber line (DSL) technology similar to that of a Comdisco subsidiary, analysts said.

"I think what you're seeing is the acknowledgment by the Street that there are companies out there that are comparable that have multibillion (dollar) captializations," said Mark Jordan, analyst with A.G. Edwards.

Analysts said that sharp moves in Rhythms NetConnections Inc. and Covad Communications Group Inc. , two providers of high speed direct data access, had generated interest in Comdisco's Prism Communications Services Inc., which offers the similar services.

"The buzz (about Comdisco) exists because of other DSL start-up companies like Covad Communications Group and Rhythms NetConnections Inc. which have market capitalizations of $4 to $5 billion with little to no revenues and significant operating losses," US Bancorp Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Grondahl said in a research note released Friday.

Rhythms NetConnections, which went public at $21 per share on Wednesday, was trading around 70-1/8 on Friday. Covad, which went public on January 22 at $18 a share, was trading around 78-3/4 on Friday.

In March, Comdisco said that as part of a new business strategy, it acquired Prism Communications, a provider of high speed data services.

Prism is currently only being offered in the New York metropolitan area, but Comdisco has said that it hopes to roll-out the product, branded Red, nationally to its corporate customers.

Shares of Comdisco rose to a 52-week high of 23-3/4 and were up 2-5/16 at 22-5/16 in afternoon trade
