Bits and bytes and everything nice. Teach me the lexicon, please.

56k = 56kbps = 56 kilobits per second.

If it was 56kBps, would that be kilobytes per second. Is 2.1GB hard drive is 2.1 billion bits, or bytes. Or is it a 2.1Gb hard drive.

Is the translation in the capital vs. lower case? Or is bits always used except in denominations over 100 million? Talk about inflation.

If I want to move a 7.6 meg file across this network thingy, how long does that take at the various network speeds. Is it 7.6MB at 100Mbps, in bytes, that's 7,600,000 divided by 10,000,000, .76 seconds for the 100 Mbps and 7,600,000 divided by 100,000 for the phone line network - 76 seconds? uh oh, I'm getting confused

Thanks, Spots.

I guess I could run that darn wire. It'll have to be outside, though. Might as well just re-side the house using spaghetti.

Peter

Chuck the telephone line and go with the cable modem.

In Chicago, we are served by Prime Cable. They are now offering cable modem service, for $125 installation fee and 79.95 a month for fast and 39.95 a month for less fast.

I would have signed up for that, but I did some further inquiries. Supposedly, in June they will allow users to go onto the internet both ways. Currently, users must use a standard phone line to upload. So, there are some negatives now; namely the installation fee, the changing of email address, the higher rates and the necessity to keep the second phone line. Once their new and improved service comes along, we'll be able to chuck the second phone line and the old ISP, and the higher rates will be mostly offset by the lower phone bill.

By the way, thanks again on your tip a while back as to my freezing computer. After three months, I did in fact get a new computer from my vendor. I'm pretty sure they didn't find the problem though because they are very busy. Before they built the new one though, I gave them a Matrox video card, SoundBlaster live card and CD recorder.

They did a good job. This machine hasn't frozen up at all. And this time, I bought DriveImage and made an image of the c drive before I did anything. If the machine starts acting up, I'll feed the virgin o/s back in.
