ITALIA's STREAM - EFFORTS TO SELL STILL UNDERWAY

Or use your browser BACK button to return to the previous page. Telecom Italia has confirmed that it is in discussion with Canal+ about the future of its Stream pay-TV business. Stream competes with Italy's leading pay-TV service, Telepiu, owned by Canal+. Stream has about 150,000 subscribers, while Telepiu has 1.5 million subscribers. Telecom is hoping to keep control of cable operations while satellite operations, subscribers and programming would pass to Telepiu, according to one Italian source. Telecom would take a small stake in Telepiu.
Telecom Italia had reached a deal earlier this year with News Corporation, to sell 80% of Stream to become Murdoch's first mainland European programming venture. The deal was called off after politicians became concerned that football rights could become a battleground. A law was passed which limits the ability of any one pay-TV operator to control more than 60% of Serie A football rights, and if only one operator exists any rights will be limited to three years.
