Sky Readies Argentina Service

Sky Latin America, the DTH service backed by News Corp., TCI International and others, will launch a $120 million venture to provide satellite TV in Argentina with partner Telecom Argentina Stet-France Telecom.

Sky Latin America and Telecom could start providing 120 channels of programming "in weeks, not months," according to company executives.

Sky's Argentina platform will compete with Galaxy Latin America's DirecTV service, launched throughout the country in June. Cable also has a strong presence in Argentina, holding a 50 percent penetration rate among TV households.

The company's pending launch in Argentina comes on the heels of soaring growth elsewhere in the region. Sky said in February its subscriber base was around 614,00, serving subscribers in Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Colombia.
