China Projects 6.7 Million Internet Users by Year-End

April 2, 1999 (BEIJING) -- The China Internet Network Information Center expects the country to have a total of 6.7 million Internet users by the end of this year.

The number of people with direct access to the Internet grew sharply in the latter half of 1998. At the end of 1998, about 747,000 computers were connected to the Internet in China, and more than 2 million users had access to the Web.

Slow access speeds, relatively high charges for Internet access and limited information in Chinese had been major obstacles that kept the business from growing. However, in recent months those obstacles are being overcome. Telecommunications authorities have recently reduced Internet access charges, and technical improvements also have accelerated the speed of access.

Chinese and foreign developers have been boosting their efforts to expand the amount of Chinese information available on the Internet. In the coming months, more government organizations will go online, thereby further increasing the information available in Chinese.
