Compaq to Report Lower-Than-Expected First-Quarter Earnings

Compaq to Report Lower-Than-Expected First-Quarter Earnings

Houston, April 9 (Bloomberg) -- Compaq Computer Corp., the No.
1 maker of personal computers, said its first-quarter earnings will
be about half analyst forecasts because of plummeting personal
computer prices.

Houston-based Compaq said earnings will be about 15 cents a
share, much lower than the 31 cents analysts had been expecting.
Sales will be $9.4 billion.

Compaq blamed sluggish demand for its products and increasing
price competition in the corporate PC market. Compaq said in late
February that sales to some corporate customers were slow, but
that they were picking up. That news prompted a 14 percent
one-day drop in the shares.

Compaq rose 1 5/16 to 30 15/16 today.
NYSE/AMEX delayed 20 min. NASDAQ delayed 15 min.
