Now we have rumors of Sun porting Solaris not only to IA-64 but perhaps to X86. etc. etc.

Solaris already runs on x86.

In my view the real danger to OS X is Linux. I get the same feeling about Linux as I did about the Internet just before the Web became big.

As far as IBM and Project Monterery, I don't see how anyone can unify Unix without Linux. From what I've heard, Linux isn't involved yet.

The really killer move would be to port the OS X interface, Openstep components, and extra MacOS goodies (Appletalk, Applescript, etc) to Linux. It would instantly kill off KDE and Gnome and all the other half-baked Linux windowing systems. And it would lead to big inroads into the x86 camp by Apple. Apple can either get beaten up by Linux or catch the wave.

I continue to think that Apple has a trick up its sleeve with OS X, probably to do with portability to PCs.

At the same time, the continued delays of NT are a big plus for Apple. NT is losing a lot of momentum.
