Compaq warns of earnings shortfall

By Stephen Shankland

Compaq warned today that lower demand for commercial PCs will keep its profit for the upcoming quarter less than half of what analysts expected.

Earnings will be about 15 cents per share, the Houston, Texas, computer maker said. Analysts expected a profit more than double that amount, or 31 cents a share, according to First Call.

"The quarter's shortfall reflects lower than anticipated market demand and increased competitive pricing in the commercial PC sector," said Earl Mason, Compaq's chief financial officer in a statement.

Compaq estimated revenue of $9.4 billion for the quarter, which ended March 31. The company will announce full quarterly results April 21.

The company's stock rose 1.3125 to 30.9375 before trading was halted today

John,

Kumar, certainly, has become the Kurlack of the box domain! More power to him! :-)

Hey, I bought some CNET today. I need someone to convince me to buy CMGI as well.

And we all know Kumar is *always* right, so obviously we should believe him ;) Isn't it amazing that CPQ ended up today -- giving those insiders the last minute to get out before it takes a bath, again. Though it's hard to see how much lower it can go (famous last words...). Yes, I'm STILL holding those d*mn CPQ shares. Thinking of sending for the actual issues and wallpapering a room with them ;)

John,
Hi!!!

RE: Do we all love Kumar now? He was clear that Compaq's problems were company-specific <EOM>

I don't...I think CPQ being way below "his projection" was a wake up call for him...Just perhaps DELL is the problem at Compaq and he is beginning to realize the market share DELL is stealing is the reason...The data server in the corporate bids is killing them perhaps?

Best, kemble
