John, Kumar's comments are silly. "Discount" in finance-speak means take into account using an appropriate risk-adjusted discount rate. If investors can see it they "discount" it.

The general problem seems to be that the market is behaving very strangely. In spite of the fact that long-term interest rates are very low, the market is applying very high discount rates to to events that are clearly on the radar screen. My personal interpretation is that the market as a whole is especially nervous about some unforeseen event occurring.

Let me lay out one scenario: there is growing evidence that Asian economies my be at the bottom, and in fact may have started recovering. If so, in spite of the fact that it will be good for US businesses it might very well imply repatriation of significant cash from the US equity market. If so, from where will it be drawn? My guess is that the market is fearful that it will come from the large-cap darlings -- the Dells and the Ciscos. Hence the dual discount rates.

But who knows?

CTC

John: 'discount' is a term used by 'punters' on the Indian stock markets, in case you didn't know.

John,
Hi!!!

RE: Me no understand analyst-speak....

Couldn't agree more...This guy has no enthusiasm what so ever...a pure turn off to me...what does he see as a postive? That would be the first question I'd ask his arrogant minded brain.

Best, kemble

John, re:<<...why does he use the word "discount"?
Shouldn't he use the term "appreciate" or something of the sort???>> This is the same as saying that the market will start to price in the expected boom in hardware sales.
