What a novel idea! But of course, there are less expensive solutions than shelling out tens of billions to purchase your best(?) mismanaged competitor. Just drive them out of business!!

And that is exactly what Dell is doing. If we can all recall those giddy days earlier this week, MD told the analysts, we're fine with your estimates. And the stock tanked.

But you've just got to sit up and take notice that CPQ is having a time of it and all of the hope and prayer in a bible belt church isn't going to change the fact that CPQ has been mismanaged and that Dell is reeling in market share.

Why buy them when you can drive them out of business? Actually, CPQ will never go out of business. They'll just noodle along as a "I was once the schoolyard bully", a bit humble and somewhat more contrite.

And their shareholders? Well you can read what they feel at the "Kick Me I Must be Stupid to Own Compaq" thread. Dell is still not such a bad deal.

Boy, it's been a week of it.

Best regards,

Mark A. Peterson
