Gary,

Intel moved their clock speeds up rapidly until about 12 months ago. There isn't much left to be squeezed out of the PIII core anymore, and they are now relying on process enhancements for further speed improvements.

Contrast this with K7 which is a brand new design and undoubtably has lots of low hanging fruit for speed enhancements. It is quite reasonable to expect K7 clock speeds to increase much more rapidly than PIII. Intel needs their next generation cores very badly.
