Accord to promote jewelry

By Our Staff Reporter

LAHORE, April 8: The World Gold Council and the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority signed an agreement here on Thursday to develop strategy for promotion of gold and jewelry sector in Pakistan.

Chief Executive of the WGC, Rolf Schnesbeli and SMEDA Chairman Khawaja Belal Ahmad signed on behalf of their organizations. Addressing the signing ceremony, Schnesbeli said that Pakistan like Turkey stood a fair chance to make a mark in the gold and jewelry trade.

He said Turkey where the WGC developed strategy for the gold business in 1993 was earning around $ 1 billion from export of its gold-made articles. At present, he said Turkey was importing about 160 ton gold annually to add value to it and sell the jewelry so made to international buyers.

Pakistan, Schnesbeli said, was already importing about 100 ton gold annually but was not able to convert it into attractive value-added articles and designs to win foreign markets. Khawaja Belal said that with the technological assistance of the WGC Pakistan would be able to foster its jewelry sector.

He expressed the optimism that country's export earnings could be around $ 1 billion in few years if gold and jewelry be developed as an independent sector.
