Jim, I don't want to sound as if I'm defending CPQ -- I'm not. What I am saying is that they probably did not do this with the idea of purposely fooling investors. Had they been doing that the channels would be even fuller right now. My guess is that this is just another case of the failure of anticipated demand to materialize. Traditional manufacturing is not demand driven. It is driven by forecasts of demand. The advantage the Dell enjoys is that it is truly demand driven. In any case, the results clearly suggest that CPQ still hasn't a clue as to how to compete with Dell.

I am just reminded of that idiotic debate with Michael Burke in which he was claiming (along with CPQ management) that Dell was losing market share.
