Compaq is one of the world's leading computer hardware companies. If it's hurting, most of it's competitors are dying. Does IBM's $1 billion PC loss ring any bells? When the shakeout in the computer industry ends, Compaq will be one of the few players left standing -- albeit larger and more profitable than before. Best of all, Compaq has a reasonable valuation. Sun (a far smaller and less profitable company) has a higher market cap because of it's dot.com ads and Dell's market cap is more than 2.5x Compaq's because it ships computers directly -- what a novel and genius concept. At this point, I would fear more owning either of those stocks than Compaq. If your timeframe is a year or longer I can almost guarantee that anyone who buys Compaq shares in the coming days will make money IF they hold the shares for a year or longer.

Luckily, I sold 20% of my Compaq shares in January. I don't attribute this to keen insight, it was more just luck and my belief in limited greed. I'm going to put my money where my mouth is, and will be replacing the shares I sold in the coming weeks.

Good luck and I hope everyone makes money.
