I believe DELL and CPQ have already announced they will start building computer equipped with cable modems. Perhaps someone can find that news release.

I believe there are basically two types of subscribers:

1. Those that are ready to be connected; all they need is the software, and hardware (probably less than one hour for these types of installs, including commute time).

2. Those that require all of the above, plus the running of cable to the computer room. These installations probably double or triple the installation time.

In order for ATHM to speed up the deployment of their product it would be in their (and our) best interest IMO, to do the following:

1. Give priority to those that are ready to be connected (no running of cable needed).

2. Have an additional charge if cable in needed to be run to the location of the computer, IE, from the living room, into another room.

I would think that in cases where no running of cable is needed, a technician could connect at least two or three times as many houses in a single day than if he had to run cable through walls in each house he went to.

I have nothing against the people whose homes aren't wired, it's only business. The alternative is to wait up to at least a month, when it is actually being installed in the area. Well, if you were forced to wait up to a month, I would think it would be in the unwired homes best interest to take several hours to do it themselves. I know I would.
