That's a real danger, but in the struggle between alliances and vertical communications companies (Commglomerates) -- the teams are being chosen up right now. T is putting together a powerful chunk of the business. MCI-WCOM should be looking for some hardware companies. There's an immense advantage to acquiring Nortel in that its so screwed up and underpriced that you get a lot that if you can reorganize you can win really big. Nortel will not straighten itself out. I doubt that this kind of reorganization is Cisco's forte. Personally, I would take bids from the big general consulting firms for a plan for plastic surgery and liposuction on Nortel, take the best and buy the beast. Note that acquiring companies with good intellects on board and liberating them can create greatness. LU is the best example of that, but NCR is not so bad either. Good God, it even helped T. With anything that Cisco buys the exchange of acquired employee stock options for CSCO options works wonders in motivation IMO. Decentralizing and refocusing Nortel would be a hard job, but someone has to do it. And he who does is going to make a bundle.
