Friday April 9, 7:50 pm Eastern Time US Oil, Gas Rig Count Hits New Low HOUSTON (AP) -- The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States dropped by five this week to an all-time low of 498, the first time it's sunk below 500. Of those that were operating nationwide, 122 were exploring for oil and 376 for gas, Houston-based Baker Hughes reported Friday. During the same week last year, 889 rigs were operating in the United States. Alaska saw one rig idled in the past week, leaving four still at work in the state. Baker Hughes has kept a rig count since 1944. The tally peaked at 4,530 on Dec. 28, 1981, during the height of the oil boom, but has set record lows in eight of the last 12 weeks. Drilling activity has dropped off due to the steep decline in oil and gas prices last year. Baker Hughes says there probably are fewer domestic rigs looking for oil and gas now than at any time since industry's emerging days of the early 1900s. Of the other major oil- and gas-producing states, New Mexico and Oklahoma gained three rigs each from last week and California gained one. I decided to join SI & participate on the board. 1st Reserve Corp. is an energy investment firm with offices in Houston and Greenwich,Ct. McCaulay is Pres.& CEO. They had an investment in Petro Corp. and sold to Kaiser Francis Oil in Aug. 96. They along with the management bought the Tenneco Ventures portion of Tenneco from El Paso Energy in Jan 97. BigBull, NOI is a good company -and about the right size to be acquired too. If you go back to the Simmons interview on Audioinvestor.com, listen to the introduction of the interview done by Joe Dancy. In the introduction Joe lists the OS companies that Merrill Lynch selected as short-term "buys" and long-term "strong buys" out of the 296 oil and OS stocks listed around major worldwide exchanges. I think that National Oilwell (check first!) was one of about 16 listed....Note debt level though...

Who are TOP DAWGS OF THE PATCH? A few posts back the Mighty Dogster commented on FGI no longer being in a leadership position. I thought it might be fun over the weekend to run a comparative chart analysis to determine the overall leaders and "laggards" in the various OS industry segments. What I did was this. I went to the MSN chart site and first plotted the osx as the baseline standard for over/under performance. I then plotted the charts of the companies in the industry segments against it. The companies in the various sub sectors, I allowed to be determined by the author of this site: osxstocks.com I refer you there for the complete list. The envelopes please....
