...Of 37 analysts polled by Zack's Investment Research, 16 have a "strong buy" advisory on Compaq's stock, 12 maintain the equivalent of a "moderate buy", and nine have "hold" ratings..

First Call's survey of 33 brokerage firms predicted a profit of 31 cents per share......


Friday's announcement confirms fears that began percolating in February, when Compaq told market analysts that small business sales were below expectations. Many companies since then have warned of a slowdown in PC demand, although one of Compaq's most prominent rivals, Dell Corp. (Nasdaq: DELL), recently said it hasn't seen any problems....

Mr. Michaels: Compaq is a stinky fish right now....and all those associated (Merrill included) don't smell too good either...what a fiasco..

If I were EP, I would get out now. He will have ended his tenure as a screw up, but he will also be forever known as leading Compaq down the path of becoming an "enterprise computing company" (a big thing for some Compaq rooters), and not just a "boxmaker" <gg>. That legacy and his 440 million (compensation including vested stock options) from last year are more than enough so that he can go play golf with Rod Canion, and have nice homes in St.Tropez, Houston, New York, and Lake Geneva, and run his charitable foundations...
