What does it mean by AT&T is walking away from ATHM?
It is nothing more than an exact literal interpretation of the press release:
TCI not meeting its subscriber numbers=ATHM wont meet earnings.
AT&T willing to give up shares if they dont meet new higher targets=walking away from ATHM.
You are right, it is silly to read things this way. Stupid is a better word. In reality its exactly the opposite. Looks to me like a move by AT&T to hold the @home coalition together when it was at risk from TCI's foolishness. "I promise to do better and I'll pay you if I dont" doesnt sound like walking away to me.
WAKE UP WORLD! @home is rolling out into the largest internet market in the world. Ok, if not for Malones short sightedness they could have had a golden opportunity 6 months ago but 2 years from now who will care?
BTW: I'll bet that the SF bay area is also the richest area in the world for high-tech investors. If they like the service there will be no end to the enthusiasm shown in the stock price and the reputation of @home.
My opinion is that the press release was intented to remind people not to have expecations too high. ATHM will meet subscriber numbers and earnings, not exceed them. Its not their style to exceed them anyhow. I like it that way.
